If grass and herbs are planted in the vegetation blanket, it is advisable to apply additional protection to the roof covering against the penetration of roots. Depending on the type of plant growth, some type of foil has to be laid down. In some projects protection sheets are absolutely required because of any possible sharp objects in the substrate. Filter membranes could be applied if the drainage layer does not have a filter membrane or if lava functions as a drainage layer. Filter membranes let the water through and separate the substrate.
