Sustainable extension for Jumbo Zelhem

Introducing greenery to the existing building not only helps cool the roof surface, but also plays an active role in enhancing local biodiversity.

A supermarket ready for the future

The renovation of Jumbo went far beyond improving the building’s appearance. Sustainability played a key role throughout both the design and construction phases. The supermarket was converted into a completely gas-free building, while energy consumption was significantly reduced through a range of measures.

One important improvement was the installation of covered refrigeration units. This greatly reduces energy loss, directly lowering energy consumption and reducing the store’s environmental footprint. Thanks to these measures, the supermarket is among the frontrunners in sustainable retail development in the Netherlands.

The benefits of a Sedum roof

A traditional Sedum roof of more than 600 m² was installed on the extension. The green roof delivers a range of benefits for both the building and its surroundings.

The vegetation layer protects the roof structure from extreme weather conditions and helps reduce temperature fluctuations. During warm summer periods, the roof surface remains significantly cooler than a conventional roof, reducing the building’s cooling demand. In winter, the system helps retain heat, further lowering overall energy consumption.

Creating more space for biodiversity

In addition to its benefits for the building, the green roof makes a positive contribution to local nature. The different Sedum species provide a valuable food source for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. This creates additional habitat for species that are increasingly losing space in urban and built-up environments. By introducing greenery to existing buildings, the roof surface is not only put to productive use but also actively contributes to strengthening local biodiversity.

A greener view for residents

The supermarket extension is located directly beneath the apartments above the retail premises. For these residents, the green roof provides an additional benefit. Instead of looking out over a conventional roof surface, they now enjoy views of a vibrant green roofscape that remains attractive throughout the year.

As a result, the green roof contributes not only to sustainability goals but also to the quality of life of the residents. The project demonstrates how rooftop greening can create value for both property owners and building users.

With this renovation, Jumbo Zelhem demonstrates how existing retail buildings can be adapted to meet the demands of the future.
