In Butlersbridge, a picturesque village located along the Annalee River, Cavan County's very first bus shelter with a green roof has been completed. Butlersbridge was selected by the local authority to be part of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2021-2025. This plan is a five-year road map that aims to help bees, other pollinating insects and the wider biodiversity. Within this framework, the roof of the bus shelter is equipped with Sedum-mix blankets, supplied by Sempergreen UK.

Biodiversity on green roofs

Green roofs contribute to promoting biodiversity in the urban environment. Sempergreen Sedum-mix blankets are planted with six to eight different types of Sedum with varying flowering periods. The Sedum plants attract bees, butterflies and hoverflies; important pollinators of flowering plants. This bus stop project, commissioned by Butlersbridge Tidy Towns and the Cavan County Council, was initiated as one of the ways to think 'greener' and act more consciously with climate change at the forefront.

“Butlersbridge village together with Cavan County Council needed to create a green roof bus shelter based on the design used in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Sempergreen UK responded immediately to our call and became a major driver of the project. The company believed in us and got buy in from the partners we needed. Their support was outstanding as is their product. The seedbed depth, quantity and quality of the sedum plants are of the finest selection. Our mission was made possible by Sempergreen!” - Cavan County Council
