The new Child Center ‘Zanddonk’ is the green eye-catcher of the Dutch city Waalwijk. From the spring of 2020 the building is ready for use. The sustainable appearance of the new building is partly due to the use of green roofs. To the design of DMV architects, three roof parts have been provided with 1,100 m² Sempergreen Sedum mix mats, installed by BTL Realisatie. One of the green roofs is also equipped with solar panels. The application of Sedum between the stairs gives the school an inviting entrance.

The added value of green roofs

The building radiates sustainability on all sides. The use of wooden cladding and green roofs was a conscious choice. The main reasons for providing the roofs with Sedum were buffering rainwater, regulating the temperature in the building and extending the life of the underlying roofing. In addition, a green roof also has an aesthetic value and contributes to biodiversity.
