Groendak op het provinciehuis Boeverbos

Green roof for the iconic Boeverbos Provincial Building

The distinctive Boeverbos Provincial Government Building in Bruges underwent a sustainable roof renovation with a 730 m² green roof. Thanks to a lightweight green roof system, the striking parabolic roof could be greened without compromising its unique architecture. The result combines aesthetics, stormwater retention and biodiversity in one future-proof solution.

Groendak op het provinciehuis Boeverbos

A new green chapter for Boeverbos

Commissioned by the Province of West Flanders, the iconic Boeverbos Provincial Government Building in Bruges was transformed with a 730 m² green roof. Located on the historic grounds of the former Oud Boeverbos estate, the building is recognised for its distinctive parabolic roof design. During the renovation, the existing zinc roof covering was replaced with an innovative lightweight green roof system. This intervention not only refreshed the appearance of the building but also introduced a sustainable function that supports the province’s climate ambitions.

The green roof makes sustainability visible and strengthens the relationship between architecture and landscape.

A challenge on a remarkable roof

The parabolic roof of the provincial government building is an architectural landmark in Bruges. At the same time, its unique geometry presented specific technical challenges. Not every green roof system is suitable for installation on curved or sloping surfaces. To successfully green the roof, a lightweight build-up was selected that was specifically designed for complex roof structures. Thanks to the low weight of the system, the load on the existing structure remained limited while retaining all the benefits of a green roof.

A lightweight system for maximum performance

An innovative lightweight green roof solution was chosen for the renovation. Thanks to its low build-up height and minimal weight, the system could be seamlessly integrated into the existing roof structure. A key component of the solution is the use of reinforced Sempergreen Sedummix Blankets. These specially developed vegetation mats provide additional stability on both sloping and curved surfaces. As a result, the vegetation remains evenly distributed across the roof while preventing slippage of the system.

A sustainable showcase for the province

The decision to install a green roof was not based solely on technical considerations. The provincial government building is clearly visible from street level and fulfils an important representative role for the Province of West Flanders.

By installing a green roof, the province wanted to make its sustainability ambitions visible to visitors, employees and passers-by. The roof therefore serves not only as a functional building element but also as a powerful statement about the role of sustainability within the public sector.

Stormwater retention as a response to climate change

In addition to its visual appeal, climate adaptation played a key role in the project. Green roofs can temporarily store rainwater and release it gradually, helping to reduce peak loads on urban drainage systems. For a city such as Bruges, this is a significant advantage. During periods of heavy rainfall, the green roof helps reduce the risk of flooding while returning part of the rainwater to the natural water cycle through evaporation and plant uptake.

Enhancing biodiversity above the city

The green roof also creates valuable habitat for insects and other small wildlife. The Sedum vegetation provides food sources for bees, butterflies and other pollinators that often struggle to find suitable habitats in urban environments. As a result, the roof contributes not only to the performance of the building but also to the ecological quality of the surrounding area.

Connecting heritage with the future

The Boeverbos Provincial Government Building occupies a site with a rich history. By adding a green roof to this iconic building, the project creates a bridge between heritage and future-focused construction. The renovation demonstrates how existing buildings can be adapted to meet modern challenges without losing their architectural character. By combining innovative technology, biodiversity and stormwater management, the project serves as an inspiring example of sustainable roof renovation within the public sector.
