Green roof for apartment complex in Zwijndrecht

At Norderstedtplein and residential building De Swinstaete in Zwijndrecht, housing corporation Trivire has made 122 homes future-proof. The renovation was carried out by Hemubo and included various measures to improve living comfort, energy performance and the climate resilience of the buildings. An important part of the project was the greening of several roofs. Across multiple roof surfaces, Easy Sedum installed a total of approximately 3,000 m² of Sedum roofing. This green roof retains rainwater for longer, helps reduce heat stress and creates extra habitat for insects and other animal species, such as birds. In doing so, it makes a valuable contribution to a greener and healthier living environment.

Housing corporation sustainability upgrade with a green roof

More and more housing corporations are choosing to include a green roof in renovation projects. In this project too, the Sedum roof played an important role. The roof helps temporarily store rainwater, contributes to cooling on hot summer days and extends the lifespan of the roofing membrane. As a result, a green roof offers benefits not only for residents, but also for the building owner.

Greening roofs for a climate-resilient neighbourhood

Greening the roofs of existing buildings is an effective way to make cities more climate-resilient. The green roof on this apartment complex creates additional biodiversity and helps reduce peak loads on the sewer system during heavy rainfall. In this way, the project contributes to a healthier and greener living environment.

A beautiful result where sustainability, comfort and greenery come together.

In addition to the installation of the green roof, the homes were connected to the HVC district heating network, fitted with new radiators and equipped with HR++ glass. The building also received a new curtain wall with electrically operated louvres. Together, these measures create a more comfortable indoor climate and make the apartment complex better prepared for extreme weather conditions caused by climate change.

Green Roof Zwijndrecht as an example project for housing corporations

This green roof project shows how sustainability and greenery can go hand in hand. By applying a Sedum roof within a large-scale renovation, the building becomes more resilient to heat, drought and extreme rainfall. At the same time, residents benefit from greater comfort and a more attractive living environment. This makes the project an inspiring example of how a housing corporation can make existing homes future-proof.
