On Gonnetstraat in the Dutch city of Haarlem, just a stone’s throw from the river Spaarne, a former industrial area is being given a sustainable future. Where outdated factory buildings once stood, ENZO Architects and HBB Groep have created a vibrant mix of housing types – with respect for both heritage and the future. Studio homes, townhouses, apartments and urban villas together form a neighbourhood that blends seamlessly into the existing cityscape. One of the key features: the green roof!
Green roof contributes to sustainable ambitions
This project reflects sustainability at every level. The 525 m² green roof, fitted with Sempergreen Sedum-mix mats, provides cooling in summer, buffers rainwater and enhances biodiversity. An essential element in the development of a future-proof city.
Preserving historic character of Haarlem with a green boost
The architecture pays homage to the area's industrial heritage, with distinctive façade details such as brick banding and rooflines. At the same time, there is room for innovation. The compact layout and smart urban planning ensure that Gonnet 22 and 24 blend harmoniously into the existing streetscape. The green courtyards and Sedum roof contribute to the intimate, peaceful character of the neighbourhood.
