Town Hall Heerhugowaard green wall

A smart green façade for a future-proof town hall

In 2018, Heerhugowaard Town Hall was given an innovative green façade that combines solar shading with living greenery. Colt Shadogreen limits heat gain, uses daylight intelligently and visibly contributes to sustainability, comfort and a healthy urban climate.

Smart solar shading with greenery

Tilting glass lamellas and façade planting work together to optimise daylight and comfort.

Cooler indoor climate

Reduced heat and glare create a more pleasant working environment, even during heatwaves.

Sustainable and future-oriented

The green façade improves air quality and supports climate-resilient construction.

Town Hall Heerhugowaard green wall outdoor

From glass façade to smart green envelope

The front façade of Heerhugowaard Town Hall no longer met modern standards for comfort and sustainability. The existing glass façade caused excessive heat and glare, making the indoor working environment uncomfortable. At the same time, sustainability and energy efficiency were high on the municipal agenda. In collaboration with Colt International and Sempergreen, an innovative solution was chosen, Colt Shadogreen. This smart green façade combines solar shading and façade planting in one integrated system, transforming the town hall into a more comfortable and future-proof building.

Project brought to life by

A clever combination of technology and nature

Colt Shadogreen integrates two high-quality façade systems. On the one hand, Colt Shadoglass, automatically tilting glass lamellas that respond to the position of the sun and regulate daylight and heat intake. On the other hand, the SemperGreenwall, a living façade built from pre-grown Flexipanels with an automatic irrigation and nutrition system. Together, these systems create a smart balance between light, heat and greenery, significantly improving indoor climate quality.

By combining solar shading with vegetation, direct solar radiation is reduced and heat is effectively kept outside. This prevents overheating and lowers the need for active cooling. Even during hot summers and heatwaves, the town hall remains a comfortable workplace where employees can work with focus and ease. The façade acts as a climate buffer between the city and the interior.

In addition to comfort, the green façade delivers clear ecological benefits. The plants absorb sunlight, filter fine particulate matter from the air and convert CO₂ into oxygen. This actively contributes to improved air quality in the urban environment. The planting design is carefully composed and tailored to the building’s southern orientation. Thanks to the use of hardy plant species, the façade remains green and representative throughout the year.

Greenery as part of climate-resilient construction

The renovated Heerhugowaard Town Hall is a practical example of climate-resilient construction. Green façades play an important role in reducing heat stress, improving the urban microclimate and future-proofing public buildings. With Colt Shadogreen, the municipality demonstrates how innovation, sustainability and aesthetics can come together in a single solution, a green façade that performs today and is ready for tomorrow’s challenges.

Municipalities as drivers of sustainable transformation

Municipalities play a key role in making the built environment more sustainable, not only through policy, but by setting the right example themselves. Public buildings such as town halls are ideal places to make sustainability visible. By investing in solutions like green façades, smart solar shading and climate-adaptive measures, municipalities show that sustainable construction is not a distant ambition, but an achievable reality. This leadership inspires residents, businesses and developers to follow suit. Heerhugowaard Town Hall clearly demonstrates how ambition and practice can come together in a single façade.

In addition to upgrading their own buildings, municipalities encourage others to take sustainable steps as well. Through subsidies, incentive schemes and advisory programmes, they make sustainable renovations more accessible for businesses, organisations and private homeowners. Support for green roofs and façades, energy-saving measures and climate-adaptive interventions helps turn ambition into action. By linking financial incentives to exemplary municipal projects, a powerful multiplier effect is created. Sustainability is not only encouraged, it becomes achievable, helping cities grow more resilient to heat, water stress and air pollution, step by step.
