SemperGreenwall shoppingmall Hilversum

Satisfied customers and increased sales? Here’s how you can accomplish this!

Have you ever paid attention to the amount of greenery in a mall? Probably you won’t even consciously think about it. However, green has a positive impact on your state of mind. Research has shown that natural environments are always preferred over non-green urban areas. Consumers are more likely to enter a shopping mall that is surrounded by plants and greenery. Besides that, the presence of greenery also leads to higher exploration percentages. Enough reasons to have a closer look at how we can create greener shopping areas together.

Enhance the Shopping Experience

With the shift towards online shopping, the ambiance in the shopping malls and streets is more important than ever. A Dutch manual “The Living Public Space” states that green shopping areas are perceived as better, safer, and cleaner. One is more likely to spend extra time in a green environment. Which affects your shopping behavior. Research has shown that greenery in and near shops therefore leads to a 12% increase in sales. A strategic move for shop owners and investors to gain a commercial advantage from this.

How to Implement Greenery In and Around Shops and Shopping Malls

To create a green environment, it’s not necessarily necessary to plant trees and shrubs. Shopping areas are often densely built-up, and there is little to no room for larger plants. Likewise, you don’t want greening in stores at the expense of the display space for sales items. We offer the perfect solution for this: the vertical green wall. To show what this can look like, we have listed a number of practical examples of green shops and shopping areas.

1. Riverside Mall Hackensack NJ, USA

This luxurious green living wall, featuring eye-catching plants across 800 square feet, is installed in the Riverside shopping mall in Hackensack. The green wall contributes to an overall luxurious appearance. Shopping malls tend to be very noisy and loud; this living wall reduces the ambient noise and creates a pleasant and green indoor environment. Furthermore, a living green wall lowers the ambient temperature, meaning that less air conditioning is needed.

2. Perry Sport, The Netherlands

This well-known sports chain in the Netherlands has creatively applied a Living Green Wall in three of its locations. The stores demonstrate how a plant wall can be a valuable addition to the interior of the store. The flexible forms of the SemperGreenwall system allow for various designs to be possible. Due to the logo and integration of the screens, this wall truly catches the eye. With this natural element, the sports stores genuinely bring the outdoor feeling inside.

SemperGreenwall Valkea mall Oulu Finland

3. Valkea Mall, Oulu, Finland

The SemperGreenwall provides a green appearance in the Oulu shopping center located in Valkea, Finland. Multiple purposes of the building have been taken into consideration in the design. One of the aims was to create a meeting place for city residents, because the function of the building is a combination of commercial (shopping) and residential purposes.

The top floors of the building are designed especially for living. Therefore, it was important to create a warm and welcoming environment throughout the entire building. The living green wall serves as a connection between nature and humans and provides a nice and calm atmosphere.

4. Sport Society Mall, Dubai

A beautiful living green wall has been created in the world’s largest Sport Mall! The Sport Society Mall is located in Dubai. This is a new and unique concept, combining a retail and sports destination, which will serve as a one-stop shopping destination for sports goods. The mall contributes to the city’s sports and healthy lifestyle, and a vertical green wall fits perfectly into this unique concept. The living wall is located in the restaurants area, a perfect place to sit back, relax, and enjoy the calmness that the green wall offers.

5. New Hague Passage, The Hague, The Netherlands

This eye-catching living wall is situated in the city center of The Hague. It’s known as the ‘Haagse Passage’ with over 3448 square feet of retail space, where the connection with nature, also referred to as biophilic design, truly shines. One of the design requirements was that it should be a light and open environment. The incorporation of the green living wall ensures that the outdoor feeling is literally brought indoors. The round-shaped windows fit perfectly into this custom-made plant wall.

Shopping Areas as Part of Climate-Adaptive Cities

Cities face a significant challenge when it comes to climate adaptation. Consider floods, extreme heat, and poor air quality. Therefore, sustainability is a necessity. We, at Sempergreen, are familiar with the statement, ‘tile out, plant in’, this is a national Dutch Campaign to transform the grey, tiled areas into green spaces. Did you know that you contribute directly to reducing flooding when you implement green instead of paved surfaces? A paved surface does not absorb water and ensures that everything ends up in the sewer.

With planted soil, the rainwater goes directly into the ground, which relieves the sewer. In addition, a green environment lowers the ambient temperature and plants absorb and reflect sunlight. Green shopping areas are therefore a direct solution against heat stress in the city. Planting trees and shrubs also filters particulate matter and CO2 from the air, which they convert back into oxygen. This will significantly improve the air quality in cities. This gives more than enough reasons for the use of more greenery in shopping areas. We want to see many more green shops, shopping streets, and shopping centers. At Sempergreen, we are happy to advise you on what we can do for you. Eliminate grey and implement green!
