Eden Tower: Europe's Tallest Green Wall Landmark

Constructing homes while incorporating more plants than the land area permits—that’s the perfect city! Frankfurt’s tallest green wall in Europe demonstrates that this vision is already achievable, fostering a greener, more attractive future.

Cleaner Air

1 sq ft of living wall filters fine dust, absorbs 2.3 kg CO₂, and produces 1.7 kg oxygen per year.

Cradle to Cradle Certified

SemperGreenwall systems meet the highest standards for quality and sustainability, holding a Bronze-level Cradle to Cradle certification.

Extends facade lifespan

A living wall shields your facade from the sun, rain, wind, and temperature changes, extending its lifespan.

Building new homes and adding more flora to the city than what could fit on the same number of square feet of land; that is the ideal future of the city! One of the tallest green wall projects in Europe has recently been installed in the center of Frankfurt am Main, proving that this ideal is already possible.

185,000 Plants spread over more than 21,528 ft²

Residential tower ‘Eden Tower‘ reaches up to 98 meters. The SemperGreenwalls comprise a total of 185,000 plants, spread over more than 2,000 m². This is almost 3 times more surface area than the ground on which the building is standing! Designed by architects Helmut Jahn and Magnus Kaminiarz, the iconic project enjoys a fantastic central location in Frankfurt’s business district. In a city that, like many others, increasingly consists of built environment, vertical gardens are the way to bring greenery back into the gray. The quality of living and working in the building itself and its surroundings was central to developer Immobel Group. The building combines impressive architecture with brightness and lush greenery. Vertical gardens merge with the glass facades to create a living masterpiece.

High-Level Challenges

This marks the first instance that a green facade has been implemented at such an elevation. To achieve the desired outcome, numerous challenges had to be surmounted. This led to new innovations in the execution of this distinctive project. As the greenery stretches from the ground level to an impressive height of 98 meters, the living wall faces strong winds on the upper levels. To prevent the plants or other components of the green wall from detaching, the Flexipanel – the foundational element of the green facade – has undergone testing and received approval for its wind load resistance.

Smart Irrigation at Every Altitude

Another challenge was the temperature variation, as the temperature decreases with increasing altitude. This impacts the water requirements. The plants are irrigated using an automated system. If the entire green strip were to be watered uniformly, it would not be efficient. To distribute the correct amount of water precisely, an advanced irrigation system equipped with temperature sensors and multiple water groups is utilized. In this manner, each plant receives exactly what it requires.

Constructing new homes while incorporating more greenery than the land below them represents the future of our cities.

Fire Safety Innovation for High-Rise Greenery

Moreover, the potential risks associated with high-rise fires are significant. To comply with the most stringent building code requirements, a new version of Flexipanel has been developed for this green wall and future endeavors. In an independent evaluation, the panel was tested for, among other factors, the rate of heat release and flashover. The Flexipanel has achieved the fire safety certification A2-s2,d0. This indicates that the panels contribute minimally or not at all to the initiation of a fire, do not produce molten parts, and emit only light smoke. Thus, the SemperGreenwall system satisfied the rigorous standards, enabling its application at significant heights. The specialized installers from Sempergreen Group mounted the facade throughout 2021 and 2022. By employing a facade lift, even the highest floors were accessible for a high-quality finish.

Iconic Building

The project developed by Immobel Group is currently nearing completion. It offers 263 luxury apartments in a central location in Frankfurt am Main at the entrance to Europa Allee and near the business districts, the train station, and the exhibition center. The eye-catching building is not only beautiful to look at; large floor-to-ceiling windows in most rooms offer spectacular views of the city, and the modern interiors create a special atmosphere full of natural light. Currently, a living wall is also being installed in the lobby. Nature is hereby extended from the outside in, creating an inviting reception for residents and visitors of this iconic tower!
