Sustainable Care Facility Combines Sedum and Solar

Adjacent to the historic farm De Grote Geer, the newbuild property ‘t Bouwhuys has been developed according to the design of architectural firm reA. ‘t Bouwhuys is a multifunctional meeting space and annex to the Family Foster Home de Grote Geer, a family foster home and space for assisted living for young adults in Houten, the Netherlands.

Multifunctional Surface

Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the Built Environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds, and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

Adjacent to the historic farm De Grote Geer, the newly constructed property ‘t Bouwhuys has been developed according to the design of architectural firm reA. ‘t Bouwhuys serves as a multifunctional meeting space and annex to the Gezinshuis de Grote Geer, a family foster home and space for assisted living for young adults in Houten, the Netherlands. The design of this new building draws inspiration from the appearance of a classic barn, albeit with a contemporary twist. The pitched roof features a green roof on the north side, while the south side harnesses sustainable energy with solar panels.

Pitched green roof around VELUX roof windows

Thanks to the collaboration between Sempergreen and VELUX, our pitched green roof systems connect seamlessly to the VELUX roof windows. This creates a harmonious whole in which the outdoors and indoors are perfectly connected. In addition, installation runs more smoothly and flawlessly, since the green roof and roof windows are fully aligned. The result: a roof that is not only sustainable and green but also brings abundant daylight and fresh air into the rooms below.

Sedum and Solar

Solar panels and green roofs are an excellent match. Their combination on a single roof offers the benefits of sustainable energy generation and greenery, such as the stimulation of local biodiversity and an enhanced living environment. Sedum vegetation can thrive even on (steeply) pitched roofs, as demonstrated by this project. We’ve developed a special Sedum blanket and system structure specifically for steeply pitched applications up to 45 degrees.
