Green Roof Elevates Knokke-Heist's Tallest Tower

The Helden (Hero) Tower in Knokke-Heist is a striking architectural beacon on the Belgian coast, with a beautiful 4,306 sq ft Sempergreen green roof being one of the eye-catchers. With a height of almost 230 feet, the Heldentoren is at once the tallest building in Knokke-Heist and one of the tallest towers on the Belgian coast.

Multifunctional Surface

Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the Built Environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds, and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

Iconic location

Designed by architect Neutelings Riedijk, the tower forms an integral part of the redevelopment of this iconic location, on the site of the former Grand Hotel – Casino Kursaal. The project consists of a slender 20-story residential tower, a 5-story flat tower, and a restaurant pavilion and is located on the promenade next to Heldenplein.

Water Storage and Biodiversity

The green roof is one of the most eye-catching elements. The roof greenery not only contributes to the aesthetics of the building but also offers functional benefits such as water storage and biodiversity. The roof captures precipitation, reduces water flooding, and provides a habitat for insects and birds, promoting ecological balance in the coastal city. In addition, the green roof has a beneficial effect on the microclimate of the Helden Tower by regulating temperature and reducing energy consumption for cooling. This makes the Helden Tower an example of sustainable architecture, with green building techniques playing a central role in the future of urban development.

Connection to Nature

The Helden Tower enhances the connection with nature through large windows and balconies that frame views of both the coastline and the green polder landscape. The green roof also plays an important role here, by bringing the view of this green element inside. The vegetation roof contributes to the feeling of freedom and security, while further emphasizing the tower’s iconic architecture and luxurious appearance. The high-quality, sustainable building materials reinforce this exclusive character.
