Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.
In Brno, a renovated eight-story residential tower now features a 3,014 ft² green roof. This upgrade enhances residents’ wellbeing, extends the building’s lifespan, and supports the city’s sustainability goals, aided by local subsidies for green roofs and climate-resilient development.

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.
A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds, and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.
In 2020, the roof of an eight-story residential tower in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, was renovated with a 3,014ft² green roof. This green oasis offers not only aesthetic benefits but also numerous advantages for residents and the urban environment. For example, a roof renovation with a green roof extends the life of the building and contributes to a better environment and well-being of residents. By making subsidies on green roofs available, Brno is fully committed to future-proof and sustainable urban development.
The original roofing of the residential tower urgently needed to be replaced. By renovating the old roof and opting for a green roof, the new roofing is protected against harmful UV radiation, significantly extending its lifespan. This roof renovation including installation of the nearly 300m2 green roof was completed within just 10 days.

Green roofs play a crucial role in making cities resilient to climate change. That is why Brno, as the first city in the Czech Republic, made available a subsidy budget for the construction of green roofs on both new construction and renovation of existing buildings. This subsidy encouraged residents to choose a green roof. Two-thirds (400,000 out of 625,000) of the roof of this residential tower was realized with this grant.
Brno is a historic city with many unused flat roofs with great renovation potential
Pavel Dostal of the Czech Green Roofs Association emphasizes, ‘Brno is a historic city with many unused flat roofs with great renovation potential. Green roofs can make buildings resilient to climate change and restore biodiversity. It is therefore essential that funding also covers the cost aspect of specialized advice.’
At the Green Roof – Living Roof conference, the green roof on the apartment building in Bohunice won an impressive second place. Greentop, the contractor of the project, thanked not only the residents of the apartment building but also the representatives of the city of Brno for their commitment to a better and greener Brno.
