Multifunctional Surface
Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.
In sunny Isla Cristina, Huelva in the South of Spain, this fresh green roof is installed atop a public building. The installation of the green roof is executed with 200 m² Sempergreen Sedummix blankets by Spanish company Sinhume.
Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.
The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.
A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds, and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.
The client specifically chose a green roof due to its ability to lower indoor temperatures. The Sedum plants absorb sunlight, with 50% being absorbed and 30% reflected. This environmentally friendly solution contributes to a cooler and more agreeable indoor environment, owing to its high thermal insulation capacity. It also results in the air conditioning system exerting less effort, which in turn leads to energy savings.
Isla Cristina, located in Huelva, Andalucia, is one of the hottest areas of Spain. A Sedum roof is ideal for such a hot climate. Many Sedum species originate from around the Mediterranean. Thanks to its natural properties, Sedum requires little maintenance in a green roof: it requires little (rain)water and nutrients which makes this plant ideal for dry and/or cold areas where water can be scarce.
