Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.
The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.
A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds, and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.
In Mörfelden-Walldorf, near Frankfurt am Main, the town hall has been fitted with a 650 m² green roof spread over two levels. The building dates back to the 1970s and is located right in the city center. The municipality’s main criterion for choosing a green roof was rainwater retention. The requirement was to achieve a water storage capacity of 27 liters per square meter. For this reason, Sempergreen’s Click ‘n go trays were selected for the project. These trays meet the required standards to retain large volumes of water during heavy rainfall. The installation was carried out by Kolb Grünkonzepte in cooperation with Seitz Gartenbau.
The town hall roof was already equipped with a photovoltaic system. Thanks to the Click ‘n go trays, the green roof could be installed quickly and easily around the existing solar panels. Construction took place during a very hot summer period with temperatures reaching around 104 degrees Fahrenheit. To protect the plants, the Sedum trays were delivered using refrigerated transport. As a result, the Sedum roof looked lush green, healthy, and fully covered with vegetation immediately after installation.
Another advantage is that solar modules operate more efficiently at lower temperatures. The greenery of the roof helps to reduce the surrounding temperature, increasing the performance of the PV system.
Frankfurt is one of Germany’s foremost cities in the greening of urban areas. Green roofs and façades aid in cooling buildings during summer and foster a more agreeable local microclimate. For this purpose, the city of Frankfurt has launched the Klimabonus program, which offers reimbursement for up to 50% of the investment costs for green roofs and façades. Through this funding scheme, Frankfurt assists private homeowners, property owners, companies, and housing associations that wish to incorporate more greenery into their buildings.
