Green Facades Create Healthy Workplace in Moers

A façade that made headlines

The 600 m² living wall on the front façade of the new Enni headquarters in Moers is one of Germany’s largest. It didn’t just transform the cityscape; it also caught national attention. In 2021 it was crowned Façade Greening of the Year, an award presented by BuGG, the German Association for Building Greening. BuGG promotes and evaluates best practices in roof and façade greening across Germany and praised the Enni project as a true pioneer for both the industry and climate protection. For Enni, the award confirmed what locals and visitors already knew: this vertical garden is more than an eyecatcher. It symbolizes how companies can invest in the climate and their community at the same time.

Complex planning, flawless execution

Behind the sweeping green façades lies a story of meticulous planning. GDL Belke GmbH, who designed and executed the installation, had to integrate the vertical gardens with 63 individual window openings. Thanks to the flexibility of the Flexipanels, the building blocks of the SemperGreenwall, each opening could be seamlessly integrated without breaking the rhythm of the design or compromising on waterproofing and insulation. The façade itself was constructed as a curtain wall with 180 mm of mineral insulation, combining energy efficiency with resilience. The result is a façade that marries architecture and greenery without compromise.

Facade technology at large scale

At 600 m², the east-facing wall is one of the largest living façades in Germany, home to around 57,600 plants. Each element was pre-cultivated in the Sempergreen greenhouse and delivered with dense vegetation of 96 plants per square meter, so the wall was instantly lush. A project of this size demands not only technical precision but also a reliable supply chain. With its extensive nursery capacity, Sempergreen can deliver large volumes straight from stock, ensuring even landmark façades like Enni’s can be realized on time and at full coverage. For clients, it proves that scale is never a barrier to going green.

Green lungs for Moers

For Enni, the living walls are part of a wider strategy to help the region achieve climate neutrality. Vertical gardens filter fine dust, absorb CO₂, and reduce noise, while also cooling the microclimate around the building. In summer, they provide shade, reducing energy use for indoor air conditioning. Bees and butterflies find food and shelter here, turning the building into a biodiversity hotspot. At the same time, staff and visitors benefit from cleaner air and a calmer, more welcoming environment.

Setting an example

Enni views its headquarters not just as an office, but also as a model. By showcasing one of the country’s largest vertical gardens, they demonstrate what’s possible, whether for a new office building, a housing project, or even a private residence. As Dr. Gunter Mann of BuGG put it when handing over the award:
