Mundus College Transforms with 100% Circular Green Facade

As part of a 100% circular renovation, Mundus College in Amsterdam installed a striking 81 m² SemperGreenwall. This sustainable facade delivers a greener school and a healthier learning environment for both students and urban wildlife.

Cleaner Air

Cradle to Cradle Certified

SemperGreenwall systems meet the highest standards for quality and sustainability, holding a Bronze-level Cradle to Cradle certification.

Extends facade lifespan

A living wall shields your facade from the sun, rain, wind, and temperature changes, extending its lifespan.

Mundus College in Amsterdam received a sustainable makeover — complete with an eye-catching SemperGreenwall. When the old façade began to deteriorate, Salverda Bouw was brought in for a 100% circular renovation. By repurposing existing materials, funds were allocated for the addition of an 81 m² living wall by Sempergreen. The outcome? A more verdant school, an enhanced learning environment, and new habitats for bees, butterflies, birds, and bats in the city’s core.

Mundus College in Amsterdam has undergone renovation, highlighted by a striking SemperGreenwall. The previous facade panels were in poor condition, with the foil of the trespa panels detaching and evidence of wood rot. Salverda Bouw was tasked with a complete renovation of the façade. It was crucial for Mundus College that the renovation be carried out in a 100% circular manner, reutilizing the cladding wherever feasible. The savings from repurposing existing materials were invested in equipping a portion of the façade with a green wall by Sempergreen. Through this, Mundus College aims to contribute to a greener Amsterdam and provide habitats for bees, butterflies, birds, and bats. With the 81m² SemperGreenwall Outdoor, Mundus College is also fostering a healthier educational environment.

Nature-Inclusive Construction

The Education Foundation Esprit commissioned the facade renovation with a nature-inclusive approach. In nature-inclusive construction, a building is designed to contribute to local biodiversity. This creates a healthy and attractive urban environment that is pleasant for all users and animals. Green facades like at Mundus College not only provide space for insects and birds, vertical greenery also contributes to reducing the heat in the city, also known as the ‘urban heat island’ effect. To make the building even more animal-friendly, nesting boxes have also been installed under the eaves, providing nesting opportunities for birds and bats.

Frost Protection for Cold Months

The SemperGreenwall features the intelligent Plant Care System. This web-based control program administers the right amount of moisture and nutrition to the plants. Moreover, it allows the green wall to be remotely monitored and adjusted, so that the walls are guaranteed to be green all year round. In addition, the green façade is equipped with frost protection for the cold winter months.

Designed for Life — in Every Sense

The planting of the SemperGreenwall Outdoor was selected with the help of an ecologist. All selected plants fit well with the flora and fauna of the Sloterplas and the surrounding park. The sun position of the facade was also taken into account. All plants are strong hardy plants, guaranteeing a permanent green appearance.
