Sedum Groundcover Enhances Stockholm’s Road Infrastructure

At Kungens Kurva, south of Stockholm, 13,000 m² of Sempergreen Sedum ground cover transforms the entrance of the new E4 Stockholm Bypass tunnel. Installed by Skanska Sverige, the lush greenery enhances the sloping and curved structure, seamlessly integrating infrastructure with the surrounding landscape.

Direct-green from day one

Pre-cultivated Sedum-mix mats arrive with 95% coverage, creating an instant green effect and minimizing weeds.

In the Kungens Kurva area, just south of Stockholm, 13,000 square meters of green groundcover has been installed at the entrance of a new traffic tunnel. The tunnels are part of an extensive road construction project through Stockholm by the Swedish Transportation Administration, called the E4 Stockholm Bypass. Sempergreen Sedum groundcover was used for both the sloping and curved exterior of the tunnel, commissioned by Skanska Sverige.

Green infrastructure improves air quality and climate resilience

While the plants offer pleasant colorful views for the drivers, they simultaneously capture CO2 and particulate matter. Compared to gray infrastructure, the green groundcover also provides better drainage, helping to buffer the rain that falls during heavy downpours. The application of more green infrastructure in Stockholm is part of the city’s current Environmental Program, to adapt the city to the changing climate and enhance its biodiversity.

Low-maintenance, big impact

With the pre-grown Sempergreen Sedum-mix mats, installation on flat, sloping, or curved ground surfaces provides an immediate green effect. Since Sedum is such a resilient plant that’s suitable for many different climates, there’s no need for intensive or frequent maintenance, saving time and hassle.
