Steeply pitched Sedum roofs on timber homes

Building company Dura Vermeer has developed and built new construction project ‘The Songbird’ in the Dutch city of Vlaardingen, on behalf of housing association Waterweg Wonen. This group of homes is equipped with Sempergreen’s steeply pitched green roof system.

"The Tree Pipit"

Building company Dura Vermeer has developed and built a new construction project ‘The Songbird’ in the Dutch city of Vlaardingen, on behalf of housing association Waterweg Wonen. This sub-plan is part of a large area development with 418 single-family homes, called ‘The New Bird Neighborhood’. Within this circular housing project, twelve houses have been realized in full timber frame construction, with both a wooden hull and a wooden facade. This group of homes, called ‘The Tree Pipit’, is equipped with Sempergreen’s steeply pitched green roof system. Solar panels have also been installed on the sloping green roof by Van Zetten Daktuinen. Next to this, the garden sheds of 24 new-build homes are provided with a Sempergreen lightweight green roof system by Wallaard Vegetatiedaken.

Nature-Inclusive Housing Project Development

Sustainability and a green character form the foundation of this project. Thanks to intelligent installations and proven technology, the homes are gas-free and energy neutral. The combination of solar panels with a green roof at an angle of 39 degrees is not only highly sustainable, but it also enhances the efficiency of the solar panels. The panels operate best at not too high temperatures.

The temperature does not rise as high during hot days

Thanks to the Sedum plants on the green roof, the temperature does not rise as high during hot days. The pitched and flat green roofs jointly contribute to the increase of biodiversity in the district. They act as stepping stones for insects, bees, butterflies, and birds. The use of green roofs enhances urban nature, improves air quality, and reduces ambient noise. The nature-inclusive homes in ‘De Boompieper’ thus contribute to a healthier living environment for both humans and animals.
