Biodiverse Green Roof Enhances Coastal Living in Brest

On the windswept Atlantic coast of Brest, a modern villa merges sustainability with subtle beauty. What makes this home truly stand out is what’s growing on top. This green roof, enriched with Sempergreen’s Biodiversity Package, has transformed an ordinary rooftop into a vibrant, living ecosystem.

Multifunctional surface

Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the built environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

Not just a roof, but a refuge

Let’s be honest: most roofs are just… roofs. But this one in Brest tells a different story. Covered in lush Sedum and enriched with a carefully composed Biodiversity Package, it’s designed first and foremost as a haven for insects. Bees, butterflies and beetles find food, warmth and shelter here, right above the living room. And while it’s busy supporting local wildlife, the roof also quietly does its job for the homeowners: buffering rainwater, insulating against heat, and softening the overall look of the villa with a natural, living skin. It is beautiful with purpose and requires surprisingly little maintenance.

A city shaped by sea and weather

Brest is not your average French coastal town. Facing the Atlantic, it’s a place where nature rules – dramatic skies, crashing waves and ever-changing weather. It’s also a city with a strong naval and industrial past, now undergoing a quiet transformation toward a greener, more sustainable future. In that context, this villa feels like a signal: a new kind of building that doesn’t just sit on the land but becomes part of its living system.

A roof that does more

The villa’s roof is covered in lush, low-maintenance Sedum blankets from Sempergreen. These hardy, drought-tolerant plants are perfect for extensive green roofs. They change with the seasons, absorb rainwater, and reduce the temperature on hot days. But this roof goes a step further. It’s not just green. It’s alive.

Small features, big impact

But the real magic happens when you look closer. Nestled between the Sedum are carefully chosen elements from the Sempergreen Biodiversity Package: a sand patch for ground bees, an insect hotel here, a bird nesting box there. Scattered among the vegetation are herbs that flower at different times of the year – making sure there’s always something in bloom for passing pollinators. It’s these touches that turn a functional roof into a mini sanctuary for urban wildlife.

Why the Biodiversity Package matters

Biodiversity is under pressure – especially in urban areas. Even in a place as wild as Brittany, the expansion of housing, roads and infrastructure has pushed many native species to the edge. The Sempergreen Biodiversity Package is a practical, scalable way to reverse that trend. It transforms an ordinary green roof into a welcoming habitat for a wide range of species

What is included in the Biodiversity Package?

The package used on this project in Brest includes:

  • A wooden insect hotel, providing nesting chambers and shelter for solitary bees, ladybirds and beetles.
  • Multicoloured boulders, not just decorative, these stones retain heat during the day, giving warmth to cold-blooded insects in the evening and early morning.
  • An open sand bed, crucial for ground-nesting wild bees to dig burrows and raise their young.
  • Herbaceous flowering plants, chosen to provide nectar and pollen across multiple seasons, extending feeding opportunities for pollinators.
  • Special substrate, the mineral-rich substrate creates microclimates for different species, including pupating butterflies.
  • Dead wood elements, simulating natural decay processes that support insect biodiversity.

Each element is designed to replicate features of natural ecosystems – nesting places, resting spots, foraging zones – but in a compact rooftop setting. And they don’t just support animals; they add texture and character to the roof itself.

Daily life on a living roof

For the homeowners, the result is more than ecological. It’s personal. You might hear soft birdsong while opening the bedroom window. Watch butterflies land on thyme flowers during a summer breakfast. Or spot a bee slipping into its tiny burrow just before sundown. These aren’t big, dramatic moments. They are quiet reminders that life is still all around us and that we can make space for it, even in the smallest corners.

Easy to install, easy to love

Despite its complexity, the green roof system is modular and accessible. The biodiversity elements are simple to install alongside the Sedum roof and require very little maintenance. The planting is self-sustaining. The habitat features are built to last. Once it’s up there, nature pretty much takes over.
