Sustainable Care Facility Combines Sedum and Solar

Next to the historic farm De Grote Geer, the newbuild property ‘t Bouwhuys has been developed according to the design of architectural firm reA. ‘t Bouwhuys is a multifunctional meeting space and annex to the Gezinshuis de Grote Geer, a family foster home and space for assisted living for young adults in Houten, the Netherlands.

Multifunctional surface

Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the built environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

This new building’s design was inspired by the look of a classic barn, but with a modern twist. The pitched roof is covered with a green roof on the north side while the south side provides sustainable energy with solar panels.

Pitched green roof around VELUX roof windows

Thanks to the collaboration between Sempergreen and VELUX, our pitched green roof systems connect seamlessly to the VELUX roof windows. This creates a harmonious whole in which the outdoors and indoors are perfectly connected. In addition, installation runs more smoothly and flawlessly, since the green roof and roof windows are fully aligned. The result: a roof that is not only sustainable and green but also brings abundant daylight and fresh air into the rooms below.

Sedum and solar

Solar panels and green roofs are a great match. Their combination on one roof provides the benefits of sustainable energy generation and greenery, such as a stimulation of local biodiversity and an improved living environment. Sedum vegetation can prosper even on (steeply) pitched roofs, like this project. We’ve developed a special Sedum blanket and system structure precisely for steeply pitched applications up to 45 degrees.
