Brooklyn Steel, a former 20,000 sq. ft steel warehouse, has been transformed into a vibrant concert venue. Its 10,000 sq. ft green roof provides natural sound insulation in the busy cityscape, while regular maintenance keeps the lush Sedum vegetation thriving year-round.

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.
A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.
This unique project is located in a 20,000 sq. ft former steel fabrication warehouse. Brooklyn Steel has been transformed to a concert hall and event space and hosts many live music events in a densely populated area. One of the primary motivations of the owners for purchasing a green roof was therefore for sound insulation. The green roof measures 10,000 sq. ft and is covered with pre-grown Sempergreen Sedum-mix blankets. Moerings Maintenance is responsible for maintaining this green roof, which includes roof inspections and fertilization.
The green roof on top of the concert venue acts as an acoustical lid for the building. It creates an ideal acoustical experience for the guests inside while mitigating sound transmission outside the building. The green roof not only has a positive effect on the neighbors of the concert hall, it is also an attractive place to stay for bees, butterflies and other insects, since the green roof comprises Brooklyn’s only urban bee farming cooperative.
