The brand-new Hotel Gilbert, located at Vienna’s popular Museum Quarter, opens its doors in the autumn of 2021. In the hotel, designed by BMW Architekten, greenery plays a major role. In addition to the use of green roofs and the greening of the interior spaces, the imposing outdoor SemperGreenwall is an integral part of the building architecture.

Pioneering project in the field of sustainable building

In the city of Vienna, Hotel Gilbert is considered a pioneering project in the field of sustainable building. Sustainability and environmental compatibility are the basis for the design of this new development. The result is a modern concept that, with lots of green, fits perfectly with the current zeitgeist. Since the original floor plan has been kept, the history of the building is also very tangible. The green inner courtyard with Scandinavian flair is open to the public and establishes a pleasant meeting point in the new building. An inviting café with the appearance of a small flower shop completes the picture.

Plant design tailored to the local climate

The plant design of the outer facade was designed by Green4Cities, an international competence center for urban green infrastructure with an office in Vienna. For the Hotel Gilbert they created a design tailored to Vienna’s climate with hardy and evergreen perennials, including grasses and shrubs. The plants are cared for and monitored fully automatically by the unique Sempergreen Plant Care System. The water and nutrient supply can be monitored remotely via an app. This system is also equipped with a special winter program that protects the plants in periods of frost.
