Green Roofs Added to 70 Homes for a Climate-Neutral Future

In Bergen op Zoom, housing corporation Stadlander is transforming the De Kuil neighborhood into a climate-adaptive district. With 171 homes being renovated, 70 equipped with solar and Sedum roofs, and residents offered green sheds, the project marks a major step toward a climate-neutral future by 2050.

Multifunctional Surface

Every component of the roof plays a role. Rainwater is buffered, and nature is afforded space to flourish.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the Built Environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds, and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

On the way to a climate-neutral district by 2050, that is the ambition of housing corporation Stadlander. In the De Kuil neighborhood in Bergen op Zoom, important steps are already being taken to achieve this; 171 homes are being climate-adaptively renovated and made more sustainable. Solar panels are being installed on 70 homes in combination with sloping Sedum roofs. Residents have also been given the option to have a Sempergreen Sedum roof installed on their shed or garage box. Completion of this large-scale renovation project will take place in mid-2024.

Stadlander housing association builds green future for tenants

Stadlander housing association is working towards a future in which its tenants can live completely sustainably. Living in a Stadlander home means living in a green environment. For the renovation of 171 houses in De Kuil in Bergen op Zoom, the corporation, in collaboration with architectural firm KAW and the contractor Constructif, sought as many sustainable solutions as possible to green the neighborhood.

Residents were involved in the process from start to finish through a sounding board group. All questions and requests were addressed in great detail. One of the main focuses was to make the neighborhood climate adaptive. Within this framework, sloping green roofs from Sempergreen were installed on 70 houses by Joru Green Solutions. In addition, De Kuil neighborhood is going completely off the gas, with homes being renovated to gas-free homes.

Social housing flourishes with new green roofs

Green roofs have a positive impact on the neighborhood. Not only do they present a beautiful green appearance, but they also contribute to increased biodiversity in the neighborhood, improving air quality by absorbing CO2 and reducing ambient noise. Moreover, they lower the ambient temperature. This has a positive impact on the efficiency of the solar panels, as they function better at lower temperatures. Thus, not only do the roofs of the houses flourish, but also the output of the solar panels. Besides, the cooling effect is not only felt in the neighborhood, but also contributes to a pleasant indoor climate. So, green roofs make for comfortable living!

Sempergreen pitched green roof system for nature-inclusive construction and renovation

A pitched green roof system by Sempergreen was applied to the roofs in De Kuil district. This green roof system offers a solution for nature-inclusive building and renovation. The beauty of the system that’s been applied is that it has the same structure as a tiled roof. It uses the so-called Green Roof Scale, the ideal alternative to the standard roof tile. The green roof scale is waterproof and breathable, just like a normal tile. The roof structure does not need to be specially adapted, as this green roof system can easily be mounted on battens. These factors make Sempergreen’s sloping green roof system extremely suitable for both new construction and renovation projects.
