A climate-resilient office for the Limburg Water Board

In Roermond, the headquarters of Waterschap Limburg underwent a remarkable green and water-robust renovation. Designed by MVD architecture, the transformation includes a 195 m² SemperGreenwall, a blue-green roof and multiple water retention features, setting a new standard for circular, climate-adaptive buildings in the Netherlands.

A showcase for sustainable transformation

Waterschap Limburg and Waterschapsbedrijf Limburg adopted a bold approach to renovation: upgrading their existing office into an inspiring example of green and water-conscious design. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding, the organizations opted to transform, reducing waste and preserving embodied carbon. The new design by MVD architecture incorporates multiple sustainable measures, including façade greening, a blue-green roof and on-site rainwater management. Together, they create a coherent system that not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances the well-being of employees and visitors. 

Greening that makes impact visible 

The renovated office features a striking 195 m² SemperGreenwall, designed to highlight key architectural zones of the façade. The modular system’s flexibility made it possible to integrate green elements precisely where needed, creating visual accents that guide visitors through the building. Thanks to its pre-grown panels, the façade was lush and green from day one and is now evolving with the seasons into a vibrant living surface. The plant palette was carefully selected for both sunny and shaded orientations, ensuring long-term vitality and color variation throughout the year. 

Rainwater as a renewable resource 

One of the project’s most innovative features is the water reuse system that connects roof drainage directly to the SemperGreenwall’s irrigation. The Plant Care System uses harvested rainwater to feed and hydrate the plants, significantly reducing potable water consumption. During colder months, the integrated frost protection prevents damage to the vegetation. Combined with the blue-green roof and permeable paving around the site, this approach creates a holistic water management loop; a perfect embodiment of circular water use in urban environments. 

With the current renovation, we can further realize our sustainability ambitions to ultimately become energy and water neutral.

A holistic climate-adaptive design 

Every surface of the building contributes to a more resilient ecosystem. Rainwater is captured and stored on the roof, filtered through a visible waterfall, and channeled to nearby infiltration basins and wadis. These measures reduce the load on local sewers during heavy rainfall and help replenish groundwater levels. The combination of green roofs, facades and landscape features reduces heat stress, improves air quality and creates a pleasant microclimate around the building. A living example of water-conscious architecture in action.

Circular materials and certification 

The SemperGreenwall used in this project is Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified, underscoring its contribution to healthy and circular buildings. Designed for disassembly and reuse, every component of the system can be reintroduced into the material cycle. The use of C2C-certified products like this one also supports LEED and BREEAM scoring, helping organizations meet sustainability benchmarks without compromising aesthetics or performance. 

Innovation through collaboration 

The success of this renovation is the result of close cooperation between Waterschap Limburg, MVD architecture, Laudy Bouw & Ontwikkeling and a multidisciplinary team of advisors. Together, they demonstrated how integrated design can transform a dated office into a living ecosystem: one that manages water intelligently, produces oxygen, and inspires sustainable change. 

With intensive façade greenery, accents have been placed on the façade to highlight important areas of the building. The flexibility of Sempergreen’s green façade system made this approach possible.
