From vacancy to vibrancy: on Croeselaan in Utrecht, a gray and outdated building has been transformed into a green eye-catcher.

These inspiring renovation projects already opted for a green makeover

Wondering what the transformation of a building looks like, after renovation with a Sempergreen system? Here are some examples of inspiring projects where greening led to a sustainable result.

Green roofs reinvent roofs

When renovating an existing roof, Sempergreen green roofs transform it into so much more than a renewed surface. Our systems merge water management, energy generation, and biodiversity into one intelligent renovation step. Rainwater is buffered to alleviate sewer pressure, vegetation offers natural insulation and cooling, and solar panels can be seamlessly integrated for maximum effect.

Simultaneously, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators discover a new habitat on your rooftop. With Sempergreen’s proven solutions, every renovated roof becomes a climate-resilient, energy-producing ecosystem that safeguards the building and the urban environment around it.

Façades that
come alive

Looking for a sustainable option for your facade renovation? Imagine walking past a building that feels fresh, vibrant, and alive. That’s what a SemperGreenwall brings to any renovation project. Instead of a bare façade, you see greenery that cools the surroundings, filters the air, and gives nature a place in the city. Indoors, people notice the difference too — a healthier, more comfortable climate all year round.

Behind the scenes, our smart Plant Care System keeps every plant thriving with minimal effort. And while the wall looks new and inspiring, it also protects the structure underneath. Renovating with a living wall is more than a technical upgrade; it’s giving people and cities a daily dose of green energy.

Groundcovers
for green surroundings

Smart renovation doesn’t end with the building itself — it extends to the spaces around it. Sempergreen groundcovers transform paved courtyards, parking areas, and neglected outdoor zones, but also roadsides, tram tracks, roundabouts, and central reservations into sustainable, climate-resilient landscapes.

Our Sedum mats  absorb rainwater, reduce heat, and create inviting greenery that makes renovated buildings and their surroundings healthier and more attractive. Easy to install and low in maintenance, they provide instant impact and lasting value for people, nature, and the city.

Everything about smart remodeling

Find answers to the most common questions about how green roofs and walls improve indoor climate, comfort, and energy savings.

Does a green roof have an insulating effect?

Yes, green roofs provide sound insulation. The combination of plants, substrate, and air layers absorbs and reflects sound waves. Research indicates noise levels can be reduced by up to 8 dB, which sounds about 50% quieter to the human ear.

Can a green roof be installed on all types of roofing material?

Yes, if the roofing is waterproof and root-proof, Sempergreen vegetation blankets can be applied to all types of roofing. This applies to flat and pitched roofs.

Is a Green Roof Sustainable?

Yes, a green roof is sustainable because it contributes to climate adaptation, biodiversity, and energy savings. Green roofs extend the lifespan of the roof covering, reduce heat stress, and retain rainwater. They also insulate buildings, reducing the need for cooling and heating. In addition, they stimulate urban biodiversity by providing food and habitat for insects and birds. Thanks to these benefits, a green roof actively contributes to a more sustainable living environment.

Is a Sloped Green Roof Suitable for Renovation?

Yes. Thanks to lightweight system options, vapor-open sloped green roofs are very well suited for sustainable renovation projects, even when the existing roof structure is maintained.

What should I consider when renovating a facade with a living wall?

Good news: a SemperGreenwall can be installed seamlessly on any background – be it stone, wood, sandwich panels, or other insulation material. The only condition is that the wall can support a weight of 45 kg/m².

A great advantage of the SemperGreenwall is that the back of the Flexipanels is both water- and root-resistant. So, the wall does not need to be waterproofed first before the green wall is installed. The green wall system can be applied directly to hard or soft insulation, without any roots being able to affect the insulation layer. Moreover, the insulating effect is maintained. It is therefore an optimal solution for renovation projects, where facade insulation is also applied.
