Sempergreen distributor Over Easy Solar for innovative solar green roofs

Posted on Monday 16 September, 2024

Sempergreen Group is pleased to announce that it has entered into a partnership with Over Easy Solar. The Norwegian company's bifacial vertical PV panels are specially designed for a sustainable and highly effective combination with green roofs. These Sempergreen lightweight Solar green roofs were introduced in the Netherlands in March at the Solar Solutions Amsterdam trade fair. There, the system won second place in the Best Innovation Awards. The partnership establishes Sempergreen as the European distributor of the Over Easy vertical PV panels for green roofs and makes this innovative solution available across Europe.

Lightweight solar green roof with lower carbon footprint

The special design of Over Easy Solar allows the lightweight VPV units to be installed ballast-free, without the need for mechanical fixation to the roof. In doing so, they have created a VPV unit of only 11 kg/m2. The low weight of the units allows for a solar green roof with a total saturated weight of 51 kg/m2. With this, Sempergreen offers the lightest solar green roof system on the market.

The units are constructed using less material, requiring no installation tools and no ballast. In addition, the roof surface is optimally covered with greenery and PV panels. As a result, this system has a relatively low CO2 impact. This makes it an ideal solution for both new and existing buildings that want to increase their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint. In addition, the Plug & Play units are ten times faster to install than conventional solar systems, with only 15 minutes per kWp installation time.

The impact of green

The vertical PV panels ensure that plants and solar panels complement each other. The plants reflect sunlight to the solar panels (albedo effect) and provide cooling on the roof. This increases the energy production of this PV solution significantly. Because of the vertical design, the green roof receives sufficient light and rainwater and maintenance is straightforward.

Trygve Mongstad, founder and CEO of Over Easy Solar, says: ‘Our solution is specifically designed to be in harmony with plants. This partnership with Sempergreen will contribute to a more sustainable future by maximising the potential of urban roofs. Together, Over Easy Solar and Sempergreen provide the building blocks for future-proof and doubly sustainable roofs to suit both existing and new buildings.’

Vertical bifacial gives high electricity value

Over Easy Solar's vertical bifacial solar panels capture light on two sides, leading to high energy yield during the day. The vertical placement and two-sided panels also create a more even energy distribution, reducing the risk of overloading the power grid. This unique energy production profile with two peak production cycles per day, more productive hours and good performance during winter conditions sets the Over Easy Solar system apart from conventional Solar systems and creates a very high monetary yield per watt peak.

Kai van Gool, Business Development manager Sempergreen: ‘Green roofs and solar roofs no longer have to compromise on each other. Now it is even easier to make roofs optimally sustainable with both solutions. This not only results in a greener living environment and an increase in biodiversity but also provides a boost to the value of the building. We are very happy that Sempergreen as a distribution partner enables a fantastic lightweight solution for both new solar green roofs and retrofit projects on existing Sedum roofs.’
