In January 2025, history was made in Amstelveen. VVE Maccabiadelaan completed a revolutionary project: the first green roof in the Netherlands combined with innovative Over Easy Solar (OES) units. With 500 m² of Sedum and 94 vertical solar panels, this is a brilliant example of how technology and nature can come together to elevate sustainability. It stands as an inspiring blueprint for sustainable urban development.

Collaborating on a green dream

The Homeowners’ Association (VVE) Maccabiadelaan had an ambitious plan for years: to green their rooftops and generate sustainable energy. The goal? “Net zero electricity” and a boost for biodiversity. With the guidance of energy advisor Adrie Ten Bookum from Energized Support, and strong collaboration with Sempergreen, Wallaard, and SamenStromen, the dream came true. It all started with a meeting at Solar Solutions Amsterdam 2024, where ideas quickly turned into concrete plans.

Pioneering project: the power of innovation and teamwork

Sempergreen brought in Wallaard (green roof installation) and SamenStromen (OES installation) as implementation partners, carefully selected from multiple contenders. Together, they delivered a total solution that blends green roof technology and solar energy seamlessly. The result? A perfect synergy between flora and solar power, optimising every square inch of the roof.

Maximising energy output

A key focus of the project was ensuring the survival of the green roof, even with solar panels installed. Thanks to the strategic placement of OES units – designed to minimise shade and maximise energy output – the sedum plants thrive. The vertical solar panels also ensure more consistent energy generation throughout the day.

Involvement as a key to success

The strength of this project lay in the active involvement of the VVE members. For the board and manager, the biggest challenge was: how do we start this process and get everyone on board? This required a clear approach and the courage to tackle the entire project properly from the start.

Well-organised virtual meetings allowed members to be involved from the very beginning. They had space to ask questions, voice concerns, and share ideas. This openness fostered mutual trust and helped the board make collective decisions. The proactive and positive attitude of the board, the manager, and the members was crucial. The result? A solid plan, positive decisions, and a successful execution. A great example of how engagement can be the key to success!

The Sedum roof powers 11 homes!

The fully renovated roof is completely covered in Sedum, with waterproofing certified for clean water drainage. The 94 Over Easy Solar units supply green energy to the shared facilities and 11 homes. The smart setup avoids energy peaks and allows the sedum to flourish between the panels. This innovative system not only produces renewable energy but also boosts local biodiversity.

Festive completion with the alderman

In March 2025, the project was officially inaugurated in the presence of Alderman Floortje Gordon from the municipality of Amstelveen. During this momentous event, the four new green roofs were officially unveiled. Together with all involved partners, the innovative character of the project was celebrated: a rooftop where biodiversity, rainwater management and solar energy go hand in hand. The alderman expressed her appreciation for the VVE’s initiative and the collaboration between partners. It marked not only the completion of a unique project, but also the beginning of a greener, more sustainable Amstelveen.

Blueprint for future sustainable initiatives

The municipality of Amstelveen has shown strong interest in this project, seeing it as a blueprint for future sustainable neighbourhood initiatives. During the installation phase, the alderman visited the site to celebrate its success and gather inspiration for other districts.

A green and energy-neutral future

Client Adrie Ten Bookum is very enthusiastic about the positive collaboration and the strength of a well-organised process: “The willingness to get it right from the start, and the commitment from all parties, made this project a success. The result is a future-proof, sustainable showcase.”

With this innovative project, VVE Maccabiadelaan shows that sustainability and aesthetics can go hand in hand on the rooftop. The green-yellow roof solution contributes to a greener, energy-neutral future. The roof is no longer just a functional space – it’s a symbol of what’s possible when we choose change together. An inspiring example for other homeowners’ associations!
